A Whale in Belfast Bay: An Unexpected Surprise on Our Lobster Fishing & Feast

One of the best things about spending time on Belfast Bay is that no two trips are ever quite the same.

Earlier this month, guests aboard The Out & About had already enjoyed a brilliant morning hauling lobster traps, learning about the life of a Maine lobsterman and getting hands-on with some of the marine life brought up from beneath the bay.

They were then heading across the water to Young’s Lobster Pound for the feast portion of their trip when Belfast Bay delivered a rather unforgettable surprise.

A whale appeared.

Captain Michael slowed the boat, gave the animal plenty of space and allowed everyone aboard to watch as it cruised through the bay. What had already been a wonderful Maine experience suddenly became a moment none of us will forget.

One guest, Jessica, later wrote:

“We had an especially thrilling time watching a whale cruise through the bay! This doesn’t usually happen, so it made for an extra-special boat ride.”

She also described Captain Michael as experienced, down-to-earth, genuine, funny and kind—and said the full experience, from hauling lobster traps to lunch at Young’s, was enjoyable from start to finish.
